Towards Battery-Free Wireless Sensing via Radio-Frequency Energy Harvesting

Diverse Wi-Fi-based wireless applications have been proposed, ranging from daily activity recognition to vital sign monitoring. Despite their remarkable sensing accuracy, the high energy consumption and the requirement for customized hardware modification hinder the wide deployment of the existing sensing solutions. In this paper, we propose REHSense, an energy-efficient wireless sensing solution based on Radio-Frequency (RF) energy harvesting. Instead of relying on a power-hungry Wi-Fi receiver, REHSense leverages an RF energy harvester as the sensor and utilizes the voltage signals harvested from the ambient Wi-Fi signals to enable simultaneous context sensing and energy harvesting. We design and implement REHSense using a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) RF energy harvester. Extensive evaluation of three fine-grained wireless sensing tasks (i.e., respiration monitoring, human activity, and hand gesture recognition) shows that REHSense can achieve comparable sensing accuracy with conventional Wi-Fi-based solutions while adapting to different sensing environments, reducing the power consumption by 98.7% and harvesting up to 4.5mW of power from RF energy.

Granted, it wasn't a regular Consumer Electronics Show (CES) โ€“ the annual mecca to Las Vegas every January to kick the tires on new tech โ€“ as several exhibitors and journalists (including yours truly) decided to cover the show remotely because of the surge of omicron cases and related travel challenges. SINGAPORE - Businesses in Singapore are set to benefit from free health screenings to spot weaknesses in their Web domain, e-mail system and connectivity. This freely provided diagnostic is part of the newly unveiled Safer Cyberspace Masterplan 2020 that aims to protect Singapore's digital sphere. The national plan also outlines the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to sniff out security threats in key infrastructure, including broadband and 5G networks, and consumer devices such as webcams and Wi-Fi routers. Coordinated by the Cyber Security Agency (CSA) of Singapore, the masterplan is central to Singapore's plans to lead in AI and smart nation deployments globally, and comes amid rapid digitalisation in recent months. "The pandemic accelerated the pace of change... Telecommuting, video calls, e-learning, online shopping, and digital payment surged," said Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat in unveiling the masterplan on Tuesday (Oct 6).

Samsung SmartThings has been the leading product in the smart hub space pretty much since the day it was released, but one small problem has long held it back: It had to be tethered to your router with an ethernet cable. For many users, including myself, that one problem was a deal breaker. There are just two available ethernet ports on my router, and I'm just not interested in turning my living room into a server closet with switches and cables running all over the place. With the third-generation SmartThings Hub (Samsung model number GP-U999SJVLGDA), Samsung finally enters the wireless age in earnest. It still provides the option to connect the hub to your router via ethernet, but Wi-Fi connectivity is the default.


Google Home and Chromecast bug shows cyber criminals EXACTLY where you live

A bug in Google's Home and Chromecast gadgets could show cyber criminals where you live. The glitch allows hackers to access the exact location of your Wi-Fi router via a malicious link that could be sent to you via email or social media. It was found by security researcher Craig Young, who said the issue allows cyber criminals to find your address or make scam messages more convincing. These include fake calls from the IRS or demands for cash from hackers making phony claims that they have webcam footage of the victim watching pornography. Google said it plans to fix the security flaw, which leaks your location with an accuracy of up to a few feet, in an update next month.


Scientists create AI that can tell if you're dreaming

Scientists have created an algorithm that analyzes RF signals in order to monitor you in your sleep. It uses a device similar to a Wi-Fi router to determine everything from how shallow your breathing is to whether you're having a dream or not. The study was conducted by a group consisting of researchers from MIT and Massachusetts General Hospital's Division of Sleep Medicine. Imagine if your Wi-Fi router knows when you are dreaming, and can monitor whether you are having enough deep sleep, which is necessary for memory consolidation. Our vision is developing health sensors that will disappear into the background and capture physiological signals and important health metrics, without asking the user to change her behavior in any way. The sensor works by sending out low-level RF signals that bounce off of people.


Thousands exposed to hackers by Wi-Fi routers

Security researchers have discovered a range of vulnerabilities affecting a range of Wi-Fi routers. Both "high-risk" and "low-risk" issues have been uncovered in more than 20 different Linksys router models, over 7,000 of which were "exposed on the internet" when the research was conducted in the fourth quarter of 2016. The vulnerabilities could allow cybercriminals to leak information about devices connected to the router, as well as overload the router itself and deny access to a user. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Google Introduces the Pixel, Its Own Smartphone

For all the bells and whistles of Google's new smartphone, the biggest point of emphasis is tucked away in small type on the back of the device: "Phone by Google." Today, most of Google's smartphone software runs on devices manufactured by companies like Samsung, LG Electronics and Lenovo, with Google's presence often relegated to the background. But with its new Pixel smartphone, introduced Tuesday at a press event, Google is front and center and selling a phone that it created from the industrial design to the components. Google's new strategy of controlling both hardware and software for its devices puts the company more directly in competition with Apple and many of its own Android partners. It's a necessity, Google says, because of the advent of artificial intelligence.

Google's latest phone is feature-rich, with new AI built-in, more storage and a better HD camera. It can be difficult to tell when you're standing in the midst of a landmark moment in history. Few guessed, for instance, that in 2008 when Google debuted the G1, the first phone to run Android, the mobile software would end up transforming the wireless world. It didn't help that when Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin went up on stage, they did so wearing roller blades. Page and Brin are probably laughing their inline skates off these days.
